Lots of progress today, though most of it doesn’t look like much. A few things figured out. A few things tidied up / finished. Nothing particularly picture-worthy in that regard.
One thing I’m going to need soon is crown molding for the bathroom. Ideally, I’d like it to be made of cedar so it blends in with all the rest of the cedar planking in there. One doesn’t just go to the store and buy cedar crown molding, though. Even the super-basic rectangular profile I have in mind (basically, baseboards for the ceiling). What’s a builder to do?
Consult his tub of remaining off-cuts from last year’s siding job, that’s what!
Start by going through the off-cuts and select pieces which meet minimum length and condition criteria. Then square them up.
Spend some time at the table saw turning wider boards into molding-width strips. then bring them over to the router table to give ’em a rabbet. No, not a 🐰, a rabbet.
This is what it looked like a while later, as the glue-up begins, piecing together all those short blanks into longer sections. I will later glue these together more, forming segments around 4′ long, which I will then process for thickness and clean up their edges. These will become the trim stock I will use as crown molding.
Yeah, it will be very patchworky. That’s okay. The front door was made from a tub of scraps, too, and it looks pretty cool (speaking of which, in case you were wondering, it’s not going to get installed until more of the interior is done just so it doesn’t get beat up as construction materials come and go).
It’s very gratifying to be able to put the scraps to good use… even if it means a moderate amount of labor to re-work them.
